Following the airing of a story titled ‘Sangala’s Struggle for Justice Exposes Malawi’s Failing Courts’ in Times Investigation Programme on Times Television, assault victim G’Bray Sangala has finally received justice after a 29-year wait.
On March 13, 2026, High Court Judge Etness Chanza ordered Chikumbutso Makwinja to pay Sangala K10 million in compensation for damages sustained in an attack that is said to have occurred in 1997.
Court records indicate that Sangala was ambushed and severely injured by three people—including Chikumbutso Makwinja— at Malamulo College of Health Sciences in 1997, when he was a student.
The impact resulted into him losing his left eye after being treated at Malamulo Hospital and Queen Elizabeth Central Hospital.

He had been seeking justice for nearly three decades.

Speaking in Times Investigation Programme this week, Sangala expressed his relief.
“I am thankful to Times for playing its role in exposing my case, which also helped other players to help me in pushing for justice,” he said.

The court’s decision came after Times Television highlighted Sangala’s struggle for justice, prompting a public outcry and comments from human rights defenders and legal experts.
“I am appealing to the courts to serve people with justice within a reasonable time,” Sangala said.

Chanza ordered Makwinja to pay the compensation within three months.
Centre for Human Rights Education, Advice and Assistance Executive Director Victor Mhango said Sangala is just one of the many people who were struggling to get justice.
He concurred with Sangala in calling for steady proceedings in the courts.
“Justice delayed is justice denied,” he said.
