The Department of Disaster Management Affairs (Dodma) has recorded over 8,000 cases of disasters since the onset of the 2025-26 wet season.
The cases include stormy rains, strong winds, lightning and flash floods.
Dodma Deputy Director of Disaster Response Fyaupe Mwafongo said they have been receiving disaster reports from local councils, indicating that the impacts were widespread and ongoing.
He said the department has, so far, registered cases affecting more than 8,000 households, with families experiencing loss of shelter, damaged property and displacement.

Mwafongo added that 15 people have died with others sustaining injuries as a result of the disasters, noting that lightning-related incidents account for most of the fatalities.
“The situation highlights the growing risk posed by extreme weather events,” he said.
Meanwhile, Dodma has received support from the private sector to strengthen its emergency response operations.
Trade View Limited has donated working materials to the department to assist officers who are responding to disasters in the field.

The donation includes 50 units of reflective vests and 300 units of raincoats aimed at improving the safety and visibility of disaster response personnel during operations.
Speaking during the handover, Trade View Head of Marketing Enea Mwalweni said the support reflected the company’s commitment to contributing to national disaster preparedness and response efforts.
Mwafongo welcomed the donation, saying such support comes at a critical time when the department is responding to multiple emergencies.
