Minister of Tourism Vera Kamtukule has challenged women in the media to embrace digitalisation to promote their brand.
Kamtukule said this during the first-ever annual general meeting for the Association for Women in Media (Awome) in Mponela in Dowa.
“I am encouraging you women in media that you should not be afraid or look down upon yourself; believe in yourself, and that will make you reach the next level. Make sure to use digital platforms to create your brand,” Kamtukule said.
Board chairperson for Awome Teresa Ndanga said the digital and technology sectors are dominated by men.
“This poses a critical challenge to creating an inclusive digital economy and attaining key Sustainable Development Goals, such as poverty reduction and gender equality,” Ndanga said.

She said without concerted effort towards increasing women’s participation in the digital sector, particularly as service providers rather than as consumers only, women and girls will continue to be marginalised and economically disadvantaged in Malawi.
Interim chairperson of Awome Edith Kambalame said the meeting was organised to discuss ways of ensuring continued improvement of the status of women in media in Malawi and help the women grow professionally.
She also said they will use the event to advocate for the welfare of women and girls in the country.
The AGM is being held under the theme, ‘Maximising the Digital Landscape: Unleashing Business Opportunities in the Evolving Media Industry.’
