Malawi joins the rest of the world in commemorating World Arts Day, which falls on April 15.
The occasion provides stakeholders with an opportunity to reflect on the role of arts in societal development as well as the unifying power of cultural expression.
World Art Day, which is a celebration to promote the development, diffusion and enjoyment of art, was proclaimed at the 40th session of Unesco’s General Conference in 2019.
Director of Arts in the Ministry of Local Government, Unity and Culture Humphrey Mpondaminga on Friday described art to national development.
“We have had several programmes on our calendar and are committed to uplifting art in the country,” Mpondaminga said.

Unesco says this year’s World Art Day is a timely reminder that art can unite and connect “us even in the most difficult of circumstances”.
In another development, Irish Ambassador to Malawi Seamus O’Grady has underscored the importance of art and culture to every nation and has called upon young people to embrace and exhibit their heritage with pride.
O’Grady said this in Lilongwe recently during an engagement at the Story Club.
The ambassador highlighted the significance of cultural identity in shaping a unique Malawian persona.

The dialogue took place against the backdrop of activities marking World Arts Day today.
The Irish Ambassador’s visit to Story Club not only highlighted the importance of the global event but also emphasised the vibrant connections between Malawi and Ireland, particularly in the realms of music, literature and art.
“Young people should look for what is good in their culture and be proud of it because this is going to create a Malawi identity,” O’Grady said.
He applauded Story Club FM for its dedication to fostering a rich arts culture among the youth, recognising the platform as an important space for emerging talents and cultural dialogue.
The ambassador’s remarks also ventured into the dynamic interplay between preserving cultural heritage and embracing progress as well as advocating for a discerning appreciation of cultural elements that forge a positive identity.
