Malawi Women’s National Football Team striker Sabina Thom is set to make her competitive debut at TP Mazembe Women’s FC in the Central African Federations’ Union Caf Women’s Champions League qualifiers today.
Mazembe are expected to face Huracanes at Estadio de Malabo in Equatorial Guinea in their opening match this afternoon before meeting AS Epah on Monday at the same venue.
The Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) giants will face AS Awa on Thursday at the same venue in their last group stage match.
In an interview from Malabo yesterday, Thom said she was ready for the big stage.
“I am looking forward to the match. Playing for a big club like Mazembe is quite an honour. I will, therefore, do my best to help my team qualify for the finals,’’ she said.
Thom signed a two-year contract with Mazembe from MDF Lionesses in June this year.
Mazembe qualified for this year’s tournament after winning the DRC Women’s Soccer National Football Championship after beating DC Bweremana 9-0 recently.
This is Thom’s third club abroad after playing for Swedish women’s side Kvarnsvederns IK between 2017 and 2018 alongside superstar Temwa Chawinga.
After the expiry of her one-year contract in Sweden, Thom returned home and re-joined Sunshine.
In December 2021, she signed a three-year contract with Simba Super Queens of Tanzania but only played for one year before returning home to join military training.
Scorchers coach Lovemore Fazili said he was optimistic that Thom would shine at Mazembe.
“She is a professional player and I believe she will perform beyond expectations,’’ Fazili said.
Thom is one of the Scorchers’ reliable players and scored a brace in the team’s historic 3-2 victory over South Africa in a 2021 Cosafa Cup semi-final match.
