Malawi Women’s National Football Team striker Temwa Chawinga has set 2024 National Women’s Super League ablaze as she is the joint top goal-scorer in the United States (US).
The talented striker scored a brace in Kansas City Current FC’s 5-2 victory over Bay FC on Saturday night.
This is Temwa’s fourth goal in the NWSL in five matches.
She has lived up to expectations in the US as she tied at the top of the NWSL goal-scoring chart with teammate Bia Zaneratto, who also netted a brace against Bay.
According to Kansas’ website, Temwa’s first goal came on a pass from Vanessa DiBernado, in which she placed her shot low and into the bottom corner.
“ T h e second came on a long ball over the top, which Chawinga brought down and drove in a goal, chipping Bay goalkeeper Lysianne Proulx, who was well outside the box,” reported the club’s website.
Interestingly, Temwa and Bia played together while at Chinese champions Wuhan Jiangda.
“When I saw she was coming here and I came here, I was so happy that [I did play]with Bia again. She is a good player and she works so hard. I was very happy that we would play together,” Temwa is quoted as saying.
Kansas Manager Vlatko Andonovski was pleased with the team’s goal-scoring prowess in the early stages of the season.
“The one thing I like about this team is nobody cares who scores the goals. That just speaks about the mentality of the team and the culture that the team comes first,” Andonovski said.
Kansas have scored 17 goals in five matches this season.
Following the win, Kansas maintained top spot with 13 points from five matches.
Temwa joined Kansas on a two-and-a-half-year contract after the expiry of her contract with Wuhan.
However, she had a good season after winning the Chinese League title, having scored 30 goals to win the golden boot award.
In total, she scored 63 goals for both club and country.
Meanwhile, Temwa’s elder sister Tabitha failed to inspire her side Paris Saint-Germain as they lost 3-2 to Olympique Lyonnais in the first leg of Uefa Women’s Champions League on Saturday night.
She has scored five goals in her debut season in the Champions League.
In the French DK Arkema 1, Tabitha is the leading goal scorer with 18 goals and she is set to win the golden boot award.
