National Football Coaches Association (NFCA) has come to the defence of axed FCB Nyasa Big Bullets coach Peter Mponda, urging the club to reveal other reasons as opposed to performance issues.
Mponda was fired on Sunday, a day after their rivals Mighty Wanderers sealed their eighth Super League championship when they clobbered Moyale Barracks 6-0 while Bullets faltered in a goalless draw against Mighty Tigers.
NFCA Chairperson Aubrey Nankhuni said as far as they were concerned, Mponda had done well at Bullets and was within reach of his specified targets.
“If they fired Mponda for performance issues, then they are wrong. If we look at statistics, you will discover that he has done well compared to last season. He might have missed the league but, currently, Bullets are second on the table and he helped them defend the Airtel Top 8 [cup title],” he said.
Nankhuni said they were following up on the issue because Mponda was their member.

“He signed a three-year deal with Bullets and he was yet to complete his first year. We need to offer support to our members during this time. Wanderers secured their title on Saturday and the following day, Bullets fired Mponda. It seems they did not follow the course of natural justice,” he said. fired Mponda.
Bullets have been quiet on Mponda’s axing.
In a statement issued on Sunday, Bullets did not elaborate reasons for Mponda’s firing.
“We are grateful to Peter for his commitment and service during his time with the club and wish him well for the future,” the statement reads.

In an interview with Times Sport, Mponda said the club terminated his contract because he did not meet some of the set targets.
“The club has terminated the contract. I was tasked to win the league and two cups this season,” Mponda is quoted as saying.
Mponda returned to Bullets before the start of this season, having helped Silver Strikers win the 2024 TNM Super League championship, ending an 11-year wait for the title.
