Former Malawi Broadcasting Corporation (MBC) Director General George Kasakula, former Finance Director Jack Kamwachale and Procurement Manager Hastings Manda are expected to appear in court today to answer charges of abuse of office and mismanagement of public funds during their tenures.
Malawi Police Service spokesperson Lael Chimtembo said in an interview yesterday that investigations were still ongoing.
The three were arrested in Blantyre on Wednesday.

“The suspects are alleged to have been involved in financial mismanagement of the corporation’s accounts, including the unauthorised airing of advertisements without payment.
“It is further alleged that they attempted to delete or manipulate records to conceal these activities,” Chimtembo said.
He added that investigations had uncovered what he called systemic weaknesses in internal controls at the state broadcaster, which may have facilitated the alleged irregularities.
According to the police, inquiries are also continuing into allegations that the suspects facilitated the procurement of an outside broadcasting vehicle from Italy, which has yet to arrive in the country.

“Fiscal police are still recording statements from the suspects, who remain remanded at Blantyre Police Station,” Chimtembo said.
Bentry Nyondo, Kasakula’s lawyer from Litz Attorneys, said they were ready to pursue the matter in court.
Last month, MBC’s Board of Directors dismissed Kasakula from his position for what it concluded was “gross misconduct.”
The decision followed Kasakula’s appearance before its Human Resource and Administration Committee the previous week on a charge of politicising the public broadcaster.
Kasakula was suspended from his role as Director General in October 2025, shortly after the change of government.
Appointed in 2021, he had signed a contract running from June 2024 to 2027.
Prior to his suspension, Kasakula was assaulted on October 10 by suspected Democratic Progressive Party cadets at MBC Television Kwacha Studios in Blantyre.
During the incident, the assailants forced him from his office and dragged him to a live studio to apologise to President Peter Mutharika and First Lady Gertrude Mutharika for negative comments made during the campaign.
